Energy Cache recently won the top prize at the recent Tech Coast Angels Fast Pitch in Los Angeles.
Energy Cache is developing the most flexible, responsive, low-cost, grid-scale energy storage solution to date. This extremely economical energy storage solution improves grid reliability, better manages the transmission network, and enables wide-spread adoption of renewable energy at the lowest possible cost to consumers.
The Technology
When megawatt-hours of storage are needed on the grid, the de facto solution has always been pumped hydro despite difficulties in siting, permitting and construction of new facilities. Energy Cache is developing a novel mechanical battery that beats the cost and performance of pumped hydro, compressed air, and other "geologic" storage solutions, while sidestepping the issue of finding suitable sites. In addition to bulk energy storage, Energy Cache's system is capable of incredibly rapid response allowing valuable ancillary services – such as frequency regulation – to be provided to the grid.

 Aaron Fyke | Founder and CEO
Aaron founded Energy Cache with Idealab in 2009 to meet the growing need for energy storage solutions on the grid. He has spent 18 years building successful clean technology companies across a number of technology areas including fuel cell, ocean power, concentrating solar PV, advanced automotive engines, and energy storage technologies. He has deep experience as an operating executive, venture capital investor, and engineer. Aaron holds an M.S. in Mechanical Engineering and an MBA from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.  Dan Bakholdin | VP Engineering
Daniel has 23 years of experience developing clean energy technologies. Most of his career has been dedicated to hands-on engineering management and leading technical teams to success, including 11 years as an executive. He holds numerous patents in diverse areas, including hybrid electric vehicles, vacuum science, high speed rotating machinery and composites. Daniel earned his B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from the California Polytechnic State University in San Luis Obispo.  Bill Gross | Founder and CEO, Idealab
Bill founded Idealab in 1996 to create and build successful businesses that capitalize on innovations in areas with significant growth opportunities. Bill serves on the boards of directors of numerous companies. He is also a member of the Board of Trustees of the California Institute of Technology and of the Art Center College of Design.
